ISSUES TO DO WITH LITERACY AND THE GIFTED AND TALENTED

What we can learn from gifted and talented writers:

  • Able pupils who are not able writers need to be enabled
  • All writers need good writing models
  • Preparatory quality talk should precede writing
  • Gauging appropriate and timely intervention
  • Using assessment in a more focused way
  • Following quality preparation, space and quiet should be provided for contemplation/reflection
  • Writers require resources/modelling capable of bringing about improved and controlled writing
  • Teachers' subject knowledge and analytical skills have to be of the highest order
  • All writers of whatever ability need and are entitled to appropriate support
  • Pupils can benefit from awareness of structured textual approaches more than standard 'frames'
  • Developing writers can benefit greatly from trusted/regular audiences e.g. writing partners.
