ISSUES TO DO WITH LITERACY ACROSS THE CURRICULUM
"Subjects matter: they are not just the setting for the deployment of someone else's skills"
Christine Counsell (History Association)
Key points for language across the curriculum:
- Interactive
- Learn by doing
- The processes of 'LaC' are relevant to all
- Remember: 'audience - purpose - form' needs to be explored in all subject areas
- Use subjects such as science and maths for LaC examples, rather than English or History
- Whiteboards for all students would be useful
- Don't rush to get it all covered (do a little but well)
- Workshops and plenary (feedback) are most important to the success of the day - get the 'big' picture
- Look at key terminology - the words are used orally; this will get every subject engaged
- Signal that it will be a long process!
- 'Word walls' need to be selective - the most important words only!
- Ensure that SMT are involved!
- Allow time for small groups from departments to develop materials
- Where has the school come from - what do they think they want? Do they know about the cross curricular objectives?
- Departments could have an improvement folder, showing the development of student skills before and after LaC work
- Departments have been 'hot housed' - given more department hire and support to develop LaC
- Share the experiences around the school
