ISSUES TO DO WITH LITERACY AND WRITING

  • There is no opposition between KS3 strategy and good English teaching. It will enhance, not prevent extended writing
  • Teachers should be encouraged to reflect on and keep current effective practices
  • Grammar for Writing and KS3 sequences for writing, if used flexibly and gradually, will help pupils control a range of longer text types with growing independence
  • Pupils need to have choice - and supported choice - if writing is to be pleasurable and purposeful. It is useful to be explicit about terms, techniques and processes. These may later be abbreviated, but will help pupils think about their writing
  • For the maximum effect, writing needs to be taught across the curriculum
  • The teaching of technical skills can liberate writers rather than stultify them
  • Effectiveness will lie in the deliver of the strategy, not its content
  • The teacher has a critical role before, during and after writing
