Rethinking Nonfiction and Progression in Reading with Nikki Gamble

In this webinar, Nikki Gamble talks about the insights from a 6-year project on subject reading in primary and lower schools. The project has involved working with and talking with scientists and historians. She will outline some challenges and benefits, distinguishing between the primary and secondary school contexts.

Nikki will then examine a range of texts, focussing on their potential for teaching in English and planning for progression with nonfiction texts. It is essentially a primary perspective and Nikki will consider some elements of subject-specific reading in this context. The session is most likely to be of interest for colleagues working with Years 1-8.

Nikki has 40 years of experience in education as a teacher and teacher educator; She is an honorary fellow at the University of Winchester. In 2010 Nikki founded Just Imagine, providing reading and English support for schools in the UK and internationally She is the author of Exploring Children’s Literature (4th edit) (2019) Co-author of Guiding Readers (2016) and Poetry by Heart. Nikki has worked as a series advisor for various publishers and has been a contributor to the Oxford Owl platform. A book about subject reading is forthcoming.
